Best for

Short to medium hair, and anyone who wants hold without shine.

Skip if

You want a slick, glossy look, or your hair is thick and coarse enough that a medium hold does not move it.

Why it made the list

The sensible first clay: predictable, widely available, and cheap enough per use that you can find out what strength suits you without spending thirty dollars to learn it.

What it does

Gel gives hold and shine. Clay gives hold and no shine, which is what most men actually want and rarely ask for by name. The look is closer to hair that simply sits well than to hair that has been styled. This one is the reasonable starting point: consistent, widely available, and cheap enough per use that you can learn what strength suits you without committing thirty dollars. The usual mistake is quantity. Most people use three or four times what they need, which weighs the hair down and looks dirty by afternoon.

What it will not do

Not for a slick, shiny look, and it does not survive heavy rain. Harder to wash out than gel, so pair it with a proper shampoo day.

How to use it

On dry or almost dry hair. A pea sized amount, warm it between the palms until it turns clear, then work it through from the back forward. Add more only if you genuinely need it.

Key ingredients

Clay minerals for the matte finish, waxes for hold.

Alternatives

Hanz de Fuko Claymation if this does not hold, at a noticeably higher price per gram.
